DNR To Talk Vermillion River Trout

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources will hold a public meeting to discuss proposed changes to regulations for trout on the Vermillion River in Dakota County. The meeting will take place at 7:00pm, September 10th at the Vermillion Highlands Wildlife Management Area office in Rosemount. The DNR is proposing to allow harvest of rainbow trout anywhere on the Vermillion according to regular statewide regulations. All brown trout will need to be immediately released. Currently, both rainbow trout and brown trout can be kept if caught within the city of Farmington. The Vermillion’s rainbow trout are stocked annually, while brown trout reproduce there naturally. The proposal under consideration also would extend the trout season on the Vermillion River to make it the same as the season on trout streams in southeastern Minnesota, which runs from the Saturday closest to April 15th through September 14th, with a catch-and-release season from September 15th through October 15th. Those unable to attend the public input meeting may submit written comments by email to metroeast.fisheries@state.mn.us. Comments must be received no later than 5:00pm on September 20th.
