Mayflies Are Back, Downtown Cuts Lights

In a message from the Hastings Public Works, they’re baaaack…..crews have started to notice an increased presence of mayflies in the areas near the rivers, and in anticipation of a larger hatching event, they are turning off the street lights in the Downtown area to minimize the attraction of these annual visitors. The lights on the bridge will also be turned off and residents are advised that these pesky fly by nighters, can add to the irritation factor for vehicles and pedestrians alike. Caution should be used when navigating thru areas that may affected with large swarms of the unwelcome visitor. Once the hatch peaks, which typically happens during the first weeks of July, The lights will be turned back on.
