Prescott Mayor Vetoes Liquor License for Carbone’s

In a reversal of anticipated support for the owner of Prescott’s Carbone’s Pizzeria, Mike Magler tells KDWA about his reaction to the recent decision made by Prescott Mayor Dave Hovel to veto the actions of the council in the awarding of the city’s only remaining Class B liquor license. This type of license is limited by the state based on population.

With a council vote of 5 to 1 in favor of the license initally held by the now defunct Cabana Jo’s, once the Steamboat Inn, located at the entrance to the city, Mayor Hovel responded with an email read to KDWA by Prescott City Administrator Jayne Brand.

We asked Magler if the access to and from Hwy 10, one of the Mayor’s main objections was something that could be corrected, given the constraints of the property.

The mayor’s letter as read by Brand, addressed reserving this license to court a larger investor such as a possible hotel/restaurant instead of an existing business, such as the one owned by Magler, who purchased the business in 2014 as an indepent owner of the Carbone name.

The council could vote to overturn the veto with a 2/3rds vote of 4 of the 6 members. A final decision is likely to be made when the council takes up the issue at the July 13th meeting which begins at 6:30 in the City Building Library.
