Fire Prevention Week

This is Fire Prevention Awareness Week, in addition to the Open House that will take place Tuesday night in Hastings and on Thursday night in Farmington Draw area firefighters have visited several schools, assisted living facilities and other community housing to get the message out to everyone how to prevent fires from harming you or your family. Some things families can do on their own is to create a map of your home with input from all members of your household, marking two exits from each room and a path to the outside from each exit.
Once you have a plan, be sure to practice your home fire drill twice a year. Conduct one at night and one during the day with everyone in your home, and practice using different ways out. Teach children how to escape on their own in case you can?t help them and make sure the number of your home is clearly marked and easy for the fire department to find. One thing to remember is when exiting a home where fire is present, close doors behind you as you leave – this may slow the spread of smoke, heat, and fire.
Once you get outside, stay outside. Never, ever go back inside a burning building. For more information, visit the NFPA website at www.nfpa.org, and be sure to attend the open house in a community near you.
