Twin Cities Marathon

The Twin Cities Marathon was run on Sunday with nearly 12,000 pairs of tennis shoes on the course for the full marathon, and another 10,000 runners for the 10-mile. While riding the green line light rail that made several stops in St. Paul, at the end of the marathon we had the chance to speak with several of the runners, wrapped in their reflective blankets, which everyone received as they crossed the finish line. A man and wife from Iowa, a couple from Detroit and a lone runner from downtown St. Paul each gave us a brief perspective on the race. One told of the 17-mile mark that threatened to halt his quest to finish his first attempt. His legs were cramping and the encouragement of his wife and running partner eventually got him down Summit Hill and across the line. One first time competitor came in at 3 hours 48 minutes, and his partner at 4 hours and 12 minutes. We saw many families gathered around runners with some groups half supporting the runner, who was completely exhausted. Each person had the silver finisher medal around their neck and they had something else in common, a weary smile of accomplishment. If any of our KDWA Radio listeners have a story to tell about their marathon experience, let us hear about it. We’d love to share your big news. Email news@kdwa.com.
