Results Of Shooting Investigation Released

Dakota County Attorney James Backstrom has completed his review of a case of an officer-involved shooting in Eagan on July 2nd, which resulted in the death of 23-year-old Isak Aden. According to the facts of the case reviewed by Backstrom, the shooting was the result of a standoff lasting more than three hours, with Aden refusing to comply with numerous directives to abandon his firearm. Authorities on the scene developed a plan to distract Aden and subdue him. When the plan was executed, three flashbang devices were deployed to distract Aden and close in on him, while other officers attempted to disable Aden with less-than-lethal munitions. When the flashbangs detonated, Aden lunged for his gun, then stood up, and raised his weapon in his right hand. Five officers fired their service weapons, fatally injuring Aden. According to the report, the time between deploying the flashbangs and Aden being shot was about 6 seconds. Backstrom stated that, after a thorough review of available information, including officer testimony, and body and dash cam footage, Eagan Officer Jacob Peterson, and Bloomington Officers Matthew Ryan, Anthony Kiehl, Adam Stier, and Daniel Nelson were legally justified in their use of deadly force in this case.
