Drowning at Point Douglas Beach

On July 6, at 5:05 PM a 9-1-1 call was received by the Washington County Communications Center on a possible drowning on the St. Croix River at Point Douglas Beach. Witnesses on shore saw 40-year-old Juan Gabriel Diaz go under the water while swimming from the swim area designation buoys back to shore. He called out for help just prior to going under the water but did not come back up. Efforts were made by witnesses to locate him without success. Deputies from Washington County, Dakota County, Pierce County, Hasting’s Fire Department and the Washington County Multi-Agency Dive/Rescue Team responded and assisted in searching for Diaz. At 6:20 PM his body was located by a rescue team diver within the designated swim area under 10 feet of water. Diaz was pronounced dead at scene by paramedics. Commander Brian Mueller, of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, talks about the incident.
