Two Residential Fires in Hastings

This past weekend the Hastings Fire Department responded to and safely extinguished two residential fires.

The first fire happened on Friday evening, August 1st. The Fire Department crews responded to 3000 Riverwood Drive, and extinguished a fire within the exterior wall. The cause of the fire was electrical wires within the wall leading to the central air conditioning unit shorting and arcing, which ultimately started the wall on fire. The fire was contained to the wall area and the damage is estimated at $10,000.

The second fire took place on Sunday, August 3rd early in the morning, with fire crews responding to 16490 Ravenna Trail. The first crews to arrive on the scene found the 2 story single family home filled with smoke. Upon entering the home, the team located a fire in the basement and knocked it down while a second team searched the main level. The origin of the fire was determined to be a dehumidifier in the basement. This dehumidifier was plugged into an outlet and operational, but the exact cause as to what ignited in the unit has yet to be determined. The damage is estimated at $30,000, with the majority of the loss being smoke damage. Both buildings are repairable and there were no injuries to the occupants or firefighters. The Miesville Fire Department assisted on both fires.
