Travelers heading back from Christmas Day festivities met a small taste of what may be in store later today and into Tuesday. In the Dakota County Highway garages, located near the south west edge of Hastings, several large plow and salt trucks filled their gas tanks and topped off their payload of salt mixture on Saturday and Sunday. I talked with a driver who told of his 105 mile road route, his part of a 24 truck fleet working on county and rural roads to keep travel flowing. The icy mix that fell Christmas Night combined with just a dusting in Dakota County, but the predicted 6-10 inches that may fall early this week, may have a more profound effect. Each of the giant Orange trucks has room for 12 tons of the salt mixture and the rotation of drivers may have waited longer this season, but as the new year draws near, there is a better chance of more hours spent behind the wheel and between the lines.
