Now an update from Hastings Family Service Associate Director Amy Sutton who announced Monday that the Minnesota FoodShare project is once again a Community Success. Sutton reports that the Hastings area communities have proved that when we work together, every person and every penny makes a difference in the fight against hunger. A grand total of 24,844 pounds of food was collected for the food shelf and their $160,000 monetary goal was surpassed with generous contributions that totaled $163,163. The food fight helped HFS maximize the proportionate matching dollars available through the Minnesota Foodshare March campaign. Sutton noted that one in every five kids in this country doesnt know where their next meal will come from, and children make up 45 percent of the hungry who visit the food shelf right here in Hastings. Thanks to this generosity, the donations will ensure that the nutritional needs of families in the Hastings area can be met over the summer when children are no longer eating lunch at school and increased daycare expenses stretches already tight budgets. The Minnesota Foodshare March campaign is sponsored by the Greater Minneapolis Council of Churches and the annual effort replenishes food shelves statewide. It is impossible to mention the many people, churches, businesses and groups that make a difference at HFS during MN Foodshare and all year long. It is an example of what a special place Hastings is,said Sutton. It is a blessing to be part of a community where people take care of each other; where everyone steps up and gets involved in whatever way they can.
