May day is a traditional celebration of spring as a local program sponsored by Wise Family Funeral home took part recently by offering may basket supplies for those wishing to leave a small treat at the door of someone special. Small baskets, paper cups or cones with popcorn, candies and and flowers are often accompanied by a knock at the door, then a quick retreat made to conceal the identity of the giver. Originated in Roman times as a celebration of spring, flowers most often were gathered and tucked into baskets that were discovered by lucky recipients. Be on the lookout in the area today for the tradition to continue.
