Bigham To Introduce Veteran Benefit Bill In 2020

With the 2020 MN legislative session only two months away, State Senator Karla Bigham is already making preparations to introduce legislation to support veterans. According to a press release issued by Bigham’s office, supporting Minnesota’s veterans will be a top priority for the Senator in the 2020 Legislative Session. As a member of the Senate Veterans and Military Affairs Finance and Policy Committee and with the Hastings Veterans Home in the district, Senator Bigham is ready to continue championing the needs of veterans. Bigham is looking forward to introducing legislation that will provide more financial resources for those living in Veterans Homes and to support bonding projects that will rehabilitate and improve facilities that are helping our veterans. The legislation would increase the personal needs allowance for domiciliary residents at the Hastings and Minneapolis Veterans Homes beginning in 2021. The bill will increase the domiciliary rate from $90 to $122 in 2021, $122 to $130 in 2022, and thereafter, the annual increase would be one half of a percentage change in the consumer price index. Senator Bigham has also supported restorative justice and alternative sentencing options for veterans, including the Veterans Restorative Justice Act, which she will again support in 2020, according to the press release.
