On Tuesday, the Dakota County Board unanimously approved a one-year moratorium preventing large wells like the one proposed by an investment group in 2019 that would have sent 500 million gallons of groundwater from Dakota County to Arizona. While the proposal in 2019 was turned down by the State DNR, County Commissioners understand that another proposal to ship groundwater is in the works by the investor group and may be more difficult for the State to deny. Commissioner Joe Atkins says he strongly opposes exportation of county groundwater, particularly since the county may face water quantity issues in the next 10-15 years.
