Members of the Hastings community gathered in a peaceful protest at 2 PM on City Hall grounds Tuesday afternoon to protest the killing of George Floyd, and the rioting and looting that occurred as a result of Floyd’s death. Event organizer Chelsea Morgan, Hastings Chief of Police Bryan Schafer, and Mayor Mary Fasbender all spoke to the gathered group. The resounding message was that protests do not need to be violent in order to be effective. Both Morgan and Schafer urged any protesters to distance themselves from anyone at the gathering who had any other intentions apart from a peaceful protest. The protest, which had approximately one hundred in attendance, continued without any reported incidents.
