At approximately noon on Friday, the Hastings Fire Department responded to a report of a fire in an apartment on 16th Street, just behind Merchant’s State Bank, on Vermillion Street. Crews arriving on the scene detected smoke issuing from a second-story apartment window on the south west corner of the structure. Firefighters were able to gain access to the apartment from the inside of the building, and the fire was quickly extinguished. The fire remains under investigation.
