Dakota County reports that attorney Kathy Keena has assumed the role of interim Dakota County Attorney. She replaces Jim Backstrom, whose retirement after 33 years was effective on Sunday. According to the County, Kathy has served in the Dakota County Attorney’s Office since 2000, and has served as chief deputy county attorney since 2019. She was the first woman to serve as chief deputy county attorney and is also the first woman to perform the duties of Dakota County Attorney. By statute, the County Board has the responsibility to appoint a County Attorney to complete the current term of office ending on January 1, 2023. The term beginning on January 2, 2023 will be filled by election on November 8, 2022.
