Water System Flushing Begins

The City of Hastings annual water system flushing program is set to begin in early April. According to City staff, these procedures will take multiple weeks to work through the entire City and the approach is a systematic way to flush iron sediments and mineral deposits as effectively as possible. While they’re at it, City staff inspects each hydrant to determine any repair needs. The public is reminded that some amount of discolored water is normal during this work and is still safe for consumption. The discoloration comes from the stirring up of iron deposits that accumulate in the pipes over time, which is the material being flushed out. If you experience discolored water, running faucets around your home for a few minutes is typically all it takes to clear the water back up.
