The Dakota County Family Dependency Treatment Court program has been recognized for its work helping families
affected by substance use.
The program was selected to receive the 2026 First Judicial District Amicus Curiae Award. The annual award recognizes individuals and programs that make exceptional contributions to the administration of justice.
Family Dependency Treatment Court, or FDTC, is a voluntary court program designed to help parents struggling with substance use regain custody of their children.
The program was first implemented in Dakota County in 2006. It brings together judges, attorneys, social workers, community corrections representatives, and treatment providers to support parents working toward recovery.
Participants are closely monitored through treatment, frequent drug testing, and regular court appearances. The program also works to address practical barriers to recovery, including transportation, housing, and access to medical insurance.
Dakota County Attorney Kathy Keena says the award reflects the dedication of everyone involved and their shared commitment to helping families overcome challenges and build healthier futures.
