DNR Steps Up BWI Enforcement for Busy Fourth of July Boating Weekend

If you’re planning to hit the water this holiday weekend, expect to see more conservation officers and law enforcement on patrol.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is joining agencies across the state for Operation Dry Water, a nationwide campaign targeting impaired boat operators. Extra enforcement will run from July 3rd through July 5th.

Minnesota has some of the nation’s toughest boating-while-intoxicated laws.

A conviction for operating under the influence—whether it’s a boat, a motor vehicle, or a recreational vehicle—can result in losing the privilege to operate all three.

Officials say the Fourth of July weekend is one of the busiest times of the year on Minnesota lakes and rivers, making safe boating a top priority.

They’re also reminding everyone to wear a life jacket. Many fatal boating accidents happen because people who fall overboard aren’t wearing one.

The goal of Operation Dry Water is to prevent alcohol- and drug-related boating crashes and save lives.

The DNR’s message is simple: stay sober, wear a life jacket, and help keep Minnesota’s waterways safe.
