Drive Safe This Summer: Slow Down, Save Lives

From Memorial Day through Labor Day, traffic increases on roads across Minnesota and the nation—bringing a higher risk of crashes.

Law enforcement agencies are stepping up patrols this summer, focusing on speeding, distracted driving, seat belt use, and impaired driving.

Officials remind drivers that even a few miles over the speed limit can make a big difference. Speeding increases crash risk and can turn a crash deadly.

In Minnesota, fines typically start at about 100 dollars for going 10 miles per hour over the limit, and penalties rise quickly with speed. Drivers going 20 miles per hour over the limit can face doubled fines, and driving 100 miles per hour or more may result in a six-month license suspension.

Speeding violations can also impact insurance rates and driving records.

Recent data shows the danger: in 2025, preliminary numbers show 388 serious injuries and 102 deaths linked to speeding. About 65 percent of those fatalities involved drivers going at least 10 miles per hour over the limit. From 2020 through 2025, there were more than 940,000 speeding citations statewide, along with 2,492 serious injuries and 778 deaths.

This summer, slow down, stay alert, and help keep Minnesota roads safe.
