The Goodhue Lions Club is gearing up for one of its biggest annual traditions.
The 62nd Goodhue Lions Bar-B-Que Chicken Dinner takes place Sunday, August 16, from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Goodhue Lions Community Building. Organizers expect to serve hundreds of people during the event, which has become a summertime staple in the community.
Goodhue Lions Club member Tom Pasch shares the details.
“It’s August 16. It’s a Sunday. It’s our annual chicken barbecue. Goodhue Lions have been in existence since 1964. We’re going to have 7,000 cobs of corn available, and 4,300 pounds of chicken is typically what we go through.”
The chicken is still prepared traditionally on charcoal grills using the same recipe that’s been a favorite for decades.
“That’s correct. It’s been the same recipe as long as I can remember, and it really is the best chicken ever.”
Proceeds from the barbecue help fund community projects and local organizations throughout the area.
“The Goodhue Lions Club gives money to a lot of nonprofits. We also gave the Goodhue Fire Department $65,000 for equipment upgrades and now $19,000 for new radios. And then last year we finished off $125,000 for the new poultry barn at the Goodhue County Fair.”
In addition to the meal, families can enjoy live music throughout the day, root beer floats, scooped ice cream, and beverages for all ages.
“This is an all-age event. We also have a couple bands playing. We have Flipside from Red Wing. They’ll play from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and then from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. is local musicians that are up-and-coming, and they’re really good.”
Tickets for the Goodhue Lions Bar-B-Que Chicken Dinner can be found at KDWA, or you can purchase tickets at the event with cash, check, or Venmo.
