Hastings Baseball Stays Hot, Upsets Mahtomedi on the Road

The Hastings Raiders baseball team upset defending state champion Mahtomedi 4-2 in a Metro East Conference contest heard live on KDWA Monday. The Raiders fell behind 1-0 in the first inning, but after an error led to Peyton Perseke reaching base and the Raiders eventually in a first-and-third baserunner situation, the Zephyrs were late on a tag at first allowing Hastings to tie the score at one, but Mahtomedi answered immediately in the bottom of the inning.

Brady Hendrickson walked and advanced to third on a Luke Niederkorn single, then came around to score on yet another Mahtomedi miscue throwing the ball away on a relay that allowed Hendrickson to score and it would remain tied at two until the seventh inning. After a Niederkorn one-out single in the top of the inning, Cole Werner stepped up to the plate.

The two-run bomb by Werner put the Raiders up for good, and Hendrickson closed out the final two innings on the mound to earn the win after coming on in relief of Carter Lundstrom in the sixth. The Raiders are now 9-4 on the season and 8-4 in conference play, and will host North St. Paul tomorrow.

The Raiders continue a busy week today in a Metro East Conference competition at Logger’s Trail.
