Hastings Police Stress Helmet Use, Traffic Safety Following E-Bike Collision

Be careful on e-bikes.

According to Deputy Police Chief Bryan Schowalter, on June 1 at approximately 4:30 p.m., Hastings Police officers responded to the 1700 block of Maple Street for a crash involving an e-bike and a motor vehicle.

The investigation determined that the 15-year-old operator of the e-bike failed to stop at a stop sign on Maple Street and collided broadside with the vehicle. The crash caused significant damage to both the e-bike and the motor vehicle.

The e-bike operator was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash and was transported by ambulance for treatment.

Schowalter says incidents like this serve as an important reminder for all e-bike riders to exercise caution, wear a properly fitted helmet, and obey all traffic laws, including stop signs and other traffic control devices.

Schowalter also offers this e-bike reminder to the public.
