The Minnesota Department of Transportation is continuing a long-term study of the Highway 52, Highway 55, and
County Road 42 corridor in Rosemount and Inver Grove Heights. The study, which began in 2024, is expected to wrap up in 2027, with any construction still several years away, currently estimated between 2032 and 2036.
The goal is to improve safety, traffic flow, and access for drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists while planning for future transportation needs in the area.
Early recommendations include realigning Highway 55 with County Road 42, expanding portions of the corridor to four lanes, adding new interchange loops at Highway 52 and County Road 42, and extending Courthouse Boulevard northward.
Traffic studies found the corridor carries significant volumes of both passenger vehicles and trucks, with more than 3,000 trucks using Highway 52 daily. Seasonal traffic can increase from about 25,000 vehicles a day in winter to 40,000 during summer months.
Crash data collected between 2018 and 2022 showed the most common crashes involved vehicles running off the road, rear-end collisions, and sideswipe crashes. Officials say public outreach and additional analysis will continue through 2027 before final recommendations are made.
The project cost has not yet been determined.
