The Red Wing Police Department recovered multiple firearms near Red Wing High School earlier this week.
According to a press release from the Red Wing Police Department, the department recovered two firearms from the vehicle in the parking lot on the campus of River Bluff Education Center at Red Wing High School, following an investigation regarding an altercation the previous evening. At no time was there an active threat inside a school building, and the firearms remained inside a vehicle and were never brought into a school.
Red Wing High School students were absent due to parent-teacher conferences.
The release states, “On the evening of March 4, Red Wing police officers responded to an altercation in the community in which it was believed a firearm may have been involved, but one was not immediately located. An 18-year-old man was taken into custody.
Following that incident, officers and investigators continued working to ensure there were no ongoing threats or potential for continued violence related to the situation. On March 5, two weapons were located in a vehicle in the parking lot of the campus of River Bluff Education Center and Red Wing High School.
The investigation remains ongoing, and the case will be reviewed for any potential criminal violations.”
Red Wing Superintendent Bob Jaszczak said, “Red Wing Public Schools and the Goodhue County Education District would like to thank the Red Wing Police Department for their swift response and professionalism. Their diligence and commitment to public safety helped ensure the situation was handled quickly and safely. We appreciate their continued partnership in helping keep our schools and communities safe.”
Red Wing Police Chief Nick Sather added, “Our officers worked diligently to follow up on the incident from the night before to ensure there was no continued risk to our community. We appreciate the cooperation of school staff and those who provided information that allowed us to address the situation before it could escalate.”
