Refinery Chemical Safety Concern

The recent refinery explosion at Husky Energy in superior has drawn attention to the Andeavor refinery in St. Paul Park. Both refineries are known to store hydrogen fluoride, which is the substance believed to have caused the explosion in Superior. Minnesota lawmakers are concerned about the Andeavor refinery due to its proximity to approximately 1.5 million people in a 19-mile radius. Within 1 mile of the refinery are Newport Elementary School, Oltman Middle School, and the business district of St. Paul Park. State legislators Representative Frank Hornstein and Senator Scott Dibble, along with U.S. Representative Betty McCollum have called for the MN Department of Public Safety, the Pollution Control Agency, and the refinerys new owner, Marathon Petroleum, to discontinue use of the compound at the refinery.
