KDWA received a special opportunity thanks to an invitation extended by Afton Alps director Amy Reents. As the warm spring weather was turning the local ski hills into rivers, a steady stream of young girls and their parents gathered in the chalet of the popular area resort for a graduation ceremony. The Ski Girls Rock program finished another successful season of empowering girls on and off the slopes. The training program inspired by Lindsey Vonn, concentrates on skills, confidence building, and training techniques intended to give young girls a lift to another level in their sport. Before we spoke to Vonn, we met a Hastings High School graduate, Joey Vossen whose daughter graduated from her second season with the program and Vossen describes her connection with Ski Girls Rock.
We then asked 8-year-old Maya Vossen to tell us her favorite part of Ski Girls Rock.
Our chance to meet with Ms. Vonn finally arrived and our most pressing question was how parents could support their daughters in building confidence in the sport.
We also asked Minnesota born Vonn if she had ever participated in a team sport.
