Regina Debuts Sim Lab

Regina Hospital’s Education Department held an open house on Thursday to let employees tour its new Simulation Lab and its HeartCode training room. The centerpiece of the Simulation Lab is Sim Man, an $18,000 simulation mannequin that nurses and other health care workers can use to improve their skills and enhance critical thinking by practicing high risk-low frequency scenarios, increasing their confidence and abilities in live emergency situations. Sim Man can interact with and respond to medical equipment like heart monitors, IV injections and defibrillators. Allina Health Learning and Development Specialist Chris Bickman went over some of the features.

Medical workers go through a pre-briefing session where they are told something about the scenario they will be practicing. The actual exercise is video taped and is followed by a debriefing where they view the tape with a learning specialist to evaluate their actions. Bickman says they will be collecting data from the training sessions to help improve practices.
