The 2nd annual For Them March to honor fallen soldiers involved more than the 12 who actually put one foot in front of the other for all 28 miles of the full day trek from Red Wing to Hastings on Memorial Day. Sponsors covered transportation to the step off point, a band prepared to welcome those gathered at the park, and several mile marker teams offered water, dilly bars, energy snacks and heartfelt encouragement to the marchers who paused at the top of the hill before finishing strong at Levee Park just before 6 PM. Creator of the march, Tom Wright, shared his view of that last mile.
And for a while, Wright admits, he’s going to focus on rest and recouping, but he thinks the event can be even bigger and involve more in this special observance.
