City leaders have been informed by Public Works Director Nick Egger of possible impact to the city due to spring flooding that is expected to affect Hastings over the next week. In a communication sent out on Monday, a template of elevation levels and their corresponding effects were detailed to outline expected levels as provided by the National Weather Service Flood Information website. An elevation of 15 feet would bring the river level to the top steps at Levee Park. A rise of another foot to 16 would mean water on the road at the lowest point on East 4th Street.
At just over 17 feet, where it is predicted that the level may rise to by the weekend, the river would reach the top of the rip rap at Jaycee Park. Should additional rain take place during that time, the crest could come higher and affect more property, both public and private before it recedes. Egger notes that preparations will take place and communications will be made with residents and others who may be impacted by high water. Some road closures could be necessary, including the low point of the lock and dam road, 1st street under the Railroad Bridge Underpass and sections of the Mississippi River trail. A crest of 18.95 feet was recorded on June 27th, 2014 and the great flood of 1965 saw water reaching 25.9 feet, which approched the elevated parking lot level near the Hastings American Legion. The situation will be updated thorough local media and the city website and social media platforms.
