The Miesville Mudhens are moving on in the section 1A tournament after a 4-3 victory over Lakeville on Sunday, as heard live on KDWA and on the KDWA YouTube Stream.
The Loonatics struck first in the top half of the first inning on a Gavin Renwick RBI single, but Miesville did not trail for long, tying the score in the bottom of the second on a Lucas McNellis leadoff solo homerun, then taking their first lead on a Ben Vujovich RBI single to lead 2-1. Ronnie Sweeny led off the third with a double and was driven in on a Max Gamm RBI single to grow the lead to 3-1, and added another run in the sixth when Max Moris scored on a wild pitch as the Mudhens led 4-1 going into the ninth.
Lakeville earned yet more late-game drama with the Mudhens as a 1-out single led to a two-out two-run homerun to get the deficit to just one run for the Loonatics, but Miesville pitcher Trevor Koenig closed it out for the final out and the save. Ryan Parker went six innings giving up seven hits and one run to earn the win, while McNellis went 2-4 at the plate, and Ben Vujovich went 3-4 with a walk.
The one-run win against Lakeville marks the third Sunday in a row where the two teams have matched up, Miesville went 3-0 with all three of the wins being by just one run.
Miesville advances to the section semifinals on Sunday where they will take on New Market.
Across the bracket, New Market took down Dundas 11-8 to advance to play Miesville, Elko defeated the Hastings Hawks 4-3 in a thriller, and Faribault upset the #2 seeded Rochester to advance to the semifinals. In the elimination bracket on Sunday, Hampton eliminated Owatonna, and they will match up with Rochester on the road Saturday. Also on Saturday is an elimination game of New Ulm at Dundas.
A win for Miesville on Sunday at home against New Market automatically qualifies them to state as either the first or second seed from the section, while a loss means they will possibly have to play an extra game to qualify to state.
Hear the Miesville vs New Market game on AM 1460 and FM 97.7 KDWA, and online at KDWA.com, or watch on the KDWA YouTube channel.
