Community helping Community

In the month of November, Lock and Dam Eatery in downtown Hastings offered free meals every Tuesday. When Jenn Melecio heard about SNAP recipients losing their benefits, Melecio had an idea: offer a hot meal to anyone in need. When the community got wind of the Lock and Dam initiative, support poured in. Melecio kept the community informed through social media by giving daily updates and reminders about the free Tuesday meals. “We don’t need to see your SNAP portal; if you need a meal, come on in,” said Melecio.

Jenn Melecio shared with KDWA a recap of November and offered a huge thank you to the generous donors.

“Hi everyone! It’s Jen from Lock and Dam Eatery. I’m excited to let you know that we had a great turnout these last three Tuesdays, and we have one Tuesday left. I also want to make sure that everyone knows this happened because of our community. I know we get a little pat on our back, which I’m proud to do, but a lot of this happens because of you and all the support that you’ve done. If it’s either making donations or coming to see us at the restaurant, which really helps. I hope everyone knows come in anytime on Tuesday. Don’t be shy. Come on in—ask for the community deal and we will take care of you. And as always, please keep spreading the holiday cheer and be kind.”
