Hastings Historic Preservation Commission Approves Multiple Property Alteration Requests

The City of Hastings Historic Preservation Commission met in regular session on Tuesday. The commission considered multiple applications for alterations to historic properties at the meeting, including:

321 6th Street E – New awning/sign, guardrail, and fence. Commissioner McCoy questioned the likely covering of the stone date marker with the awning. Staff explained that the property is not from the district’s period of significance, so the emphasis of the review is on the streetscape and impact on the district rather than historic details. Approved 8-0.

Some commissioners had concerns with a vinyl fence in the district. They thought a wood fence was more appropriate, and it is specifically listed in the Design Guidelines as an appropriate material. Staff and other commissioners cited a few vinyl fences that have been approved by the HPC in specific situations. Approved 6-2.

705 Vermillion St – Porch and stairway modifications. The applicants explained their project and their assumptions about past porch additions and alterations. Commissioner Toppin asked if there was a proposal for a sidewalk leading to the new northern stairway. The applicants said that would be their next proposal. Approved 8-0

MnDOT is planning to attend the July meeting for further concept review of the Todd Field wall replacement proposal. The next regularly scheduled meeting will be held on July 21, 2026, at Hastings City Hall.
