Minnesota DNR Issues Spring Burning Restrictions

Due to the increased risk of wildfires brought on by warm temperatures and dry conditions, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is limiting the open burning of yard debris—sticks, leaves or grass—starting on Monday, March 30. Hennepin, Ramsey, Scott, and Washington are some of the counties that have limitations.

According to the MN DNR, until restrictions are removed, the DNR will not grant permits for the open burning of brush or yard debris in these counties.

In Minnesota, over 90% of wildfires are started by humans. The person who starts a fire is responsible for any damage it causes and the expenses associated with fighting the fire if it rekindles or escapes.

Restrictions on burning will be updated as conditions change. Visit the DNR website’s statewide wildfire danger and burning restrictions page (mndnr.gov/burnrestrictions) for additional details and daily updates on current fire risk and open burning restrictions.
