Spiral Food Co-Op celebrated their 47th anniversary of being in Hastings over the weekend, welcoming members new and old along with longtime staff members and those in the community to celebrate. General Manager Matt Malecha said it was great to see many of those who helped build Spiral Food Co-Op into what it is today.
“We certainly still have 2-3 individuals that work today on staff that were actually part of the start up of the co-op 47 years ago, and then we still consistently go ahead and see a lot of former members, board members, people that volunteered back when that was a thing at the co-op, so it’s always a great time to go ahead and see them kind of rekindle some of those relationships.”
Malecha said he appreciates the deep connection they have created over their 47 years in Hastings.
“It’s a long term legacy. I am, I believe, the night general manager. I’ve been doing it for the last 11 years. It’s still surprising to me how many folks I run across that may have been kids, or volunteered, or may have their family been shopping here for decades. It’s a pretty good feeling to know that you’ve continued to provide that for the community, and try to make sure that we are going forward and being able to offer that for future generations.”
Spiral Food Co-Op is a community owned store, and Malecha said anyone interested in either joining or learning more can stop into the store.
