Two Felony Burglary Charges Filed Against Hastings Man After June 11 Altercation

A Hastings man has been charged with two counts of felony burglary and two counts of domestic assault after an incident in mid-June.

According to court records, 37-year-old Maynard Lee Johnson of Hastings was arrested after the Hastings Police Department was dispatched to a residence on North Frontage Road on June 11, 2026.

Court documents state the victim had called 911 after Johnson had been drinking at their residence, and after a child commented about his drinking, Johnson became upset and began yelling and screaming.

The victim sent their children and themselves over to a neighbor’s house to avoid Johnson, who followed them over to the neighbor’s house, took a bottle of alcohol, and threw it on the ground, breaking it, and began to threaten to harm the victim.

When the homeowners told Maynard to leave, Johnson went up to the front door, hit the door, and then opened it before entering the home without permission, while the victim was telling him to leave.

While inside the residence, Johnson physically pushed the victim with both hands. Johnson initially left, but then re-entered the neighbor’s residence before being told to leave again by the homeowners. The victim’s two children were present when this assault occurred.

When officers arrived on scene, Johnson was outside of the neighbor’s residence and proceeded to threaten officers and also proceeded to refer to the responding officers by a number of racial and homophobic slurs and referred to himself as a member of the Aryan Nation.

A duffel bag found in Defendant’s possession at the time of his arrest contained a black hatchet and a hammer. While being transported to the Dakota County Jail, Defendant continued to threaten officers.

Johnson is charged with Burglary in the 1st Degree (Assault) and Burglary in the 1st Degree (Occupied Dwelling), both felonies that carry up to 20 years in prison, in addition to Domestic Assault (Intentionally Inflict or Attempt to Inflict Bodily Harm) and Domestic Assault (Cause Fear of Immediate Bodily Harm or Death), both misdemeanors.

As with any criminal case, a defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
