Vivyann Swanson Wins Essay Contest and Becomes Mayor for a Day

At the Hastings City Council meeting on Tuesday, February 17th, Mayor Mary Fasbender was joined by LMC Mayor for a Day essay contest winner Vivyann Swanson. Swanson opened the Hastings City Council meeting by calling it to order. Mayor Fasbender introduced mayor-for-a-day Swanson and offered a recap of their half-day together: they toured city hall, visited various departments, and mayor-for-a-day Swanson had the opportunity to attend a parks and rec department workshop. This special day ended with an attendance at the Hastings City Council meeting, where Vivyann Swanson read aloud her essay, which highlighted Swanson’s idea for Hastings Kindness Day. Her thoughtfulness in the essay made it evident why Mayor Fasbender selected her essay from the eleven other essay applicants.

KDWA connected with Vivyann Swanson to hear about her experience being mayor for a day.

Swanson shares insight about the essay and how it felt to be selected as the mayor-for-a-day winner, and explains what it was like being in Mayor Fasbender’s shoes.

Vivyann Swanon’s dad, Mike Swanson, remembers his reaction upon hearing that Vivyann won mayor-for-a-day.
